oreo cookies, apples, hand-held mirror

Description

Teachers can demonstrate how sweet snacks (like cookies) are not healthy for your teeth by eating an oreo cookie, and then showing your teeth to the class. Let children tell you how your teeth look (with all the black crumbs stuck to your teeth). Discuss how plaque builds up on teeth.

Next, take an apple slice and chew it. Again, show the children your teeth and how much cleaner they look. Talk about how healthy foods, like fruits and vegetables, are not only good for your body, but they also help keep your teeth clean.

For snack time, give each child a couple of cookies with no drink and then let them look in the mirror and their teeth. Then give each child some apple slices and have them look at their teeth again.
