Supplies

Basket, crayons, or markers or shapes cut out of contruction paper, any object that can fit in a basket and used to make a pattern

Description

Fill the basket with items to be used for patterning.  Have the children sit in a circle.  Explain to the children what a pattern is, you may even want to show them an example of a pattern.

To start keep the example of the pattern out in the center of the circle for them to see.  Give the first child the basket and ask them to pull out the object that starts the pattern that is in the center of the circle.  The child finds the object in the basket, holds on to it and then passes the basket to the next student.  The next student looks at the pattern and finds the object that corresponds to the next object on the pattern example. Continue around the circle.

Variations include more complex patterns and allowing the class to come up with their own pattern without a pattern example in the center.  This is a great activity to customize for themes using different containers for your "basket" (plastic pumpkin, stocking, beach bucket etc.), objects may also vary based on theme.
