Age Group

Supplies

eggs (hard boiled), soda (coca-cola), toothbrush and toothpaste

Description

During a theme on "Dental Health", "Community Helpers" or "Taking Care of Yourself" - show children how brushing your teeth actually can keep them clean with this experiment.

  • Boil 2 to 3 white eggs.
  • Talk with children about the importance of brushing your teeth each day.  Explain how certain foods and drinks are harmful to your teeth and can leave teeth discolored if you don't brush.
  • Fill a small jar or cup with soda (coca-cola).
  • Place a hard-boiled egg in each cup and leave it there overnight.

The next day, show the class how the eggshell is stained from the soda.   Ask the children what they think they can do to remove the stains.

Place some toothpaste on a toothbrush and let the children take turns brushing the stains off the egg.  Show them proper brushing technique (to brush firmly, but gently).  This will help them to learn how to take proper care of their teeth.  Follow up this experiment with a visit from a local dentist.
