Preschool Supplieslarge bowl, small bowls, spoons, variety of different fruits, rotten banana Description
This is a fun activity to do at the beginning of the school year and when going over classroom rules. The concepts learned can be referred to many times throughout the school year.
Beforehand, ask each child (family) to bring in a type of fruit to share with the class. This contributes to a sense of community when they bring something in to share with everyone. Wash and cut the fruit before starting the activity.
Next, explain to the children that bowl is like the classroom, and the fruit are all of us (teachers and children) in the classroom. Say that when the fruit is all mixed together, it creates a yummy treat - just like when we are all in our class together, we can create many wonderful things.
Add one type of fruit at a time and be creative when talking about each fruit (ie. "Strawberries are like the children who share", "Blueberries are like the children who wait their turn", "Apples are like teachers who help you", etc.).
Keep talking about how good the fruit salad will be as you start to peel the rotten banana. Pretend you are about to cut it up and put it into the salad. The kids will inevitably tell you to "stop" before you can put it into the salad. Ask the children why they do not want you to put the banana in the salad ("because it's rotten", "it will make the salad taste yucky"). Then tell them that the rotten banana is just like a friend who doesn't share or who hurts their friends. Talk with the children about the importance of following rules and having good manners. Then scoop out the salad and share!
