Let’s Pretend! Using Storybooks to Encourage Play and Friendships
*This is a one (1) day event – Thursday, May 21, 2015
Audience: Preschool and Kindergarten General and Special Education Teachers, Paraeducators, and Student Support Professionals
Presenter: Paquita Jarman-Smith and Smita Worah, Ph.D., SERC Consultants
Exposure to great storybooks stimulates more pretend play among children and helps them gain important literacy skills. Books can also stimulate more thinking and creativity during play (Gronlund, 2010).
Participants in this learning opportunity will gain an understanding of the value of book-related pretend play using the CT Early Learning and Development Standards; and design learning experiences that help children develop a deeper understanding of literature and create opportunities to build friendships in the classroom through pretend play. Participants also will learn evidence-based strategies that build comprehension skills, promote peer and play interactions, and ensure participation of ability, linguistically, and culturally diverse learners.
Participants are asked to bring a children’s book that promotes role-play.
